BC Choral Federation Youth Council

The BCCF Youth Council is a diverse group of young volunteers from across the province who are brought together by their love for choral singing. We meet monthly to plan workshops, volunteer at events, advocate for youth choral music, and administer the BC Youth Choir and BC Chamber Choir.

We exist to develop and support opportunities that promote choral singing among the youth of British Columbia.

If you'd like to be involved or have any questions or comments, please contact us!

Iris Chan - Secretary

Iris believes that music does wonders. She has a Bachelor of Music from UBC and is preparing to be a music teacher. Although she plays piano since age four, she enjoys playing percussion and singing. After singing in high school, she continues to sing in university and is currently singing in Schola Cantorum. During her leisure time, she plays badminton and dances.

Jamie Russell - Promotions Team

Jamie has been actively involved in choral music in BC since she began to seriously sing in elementary school, although she'd been providing background/foreground music for her family for years prior. She has felt fortunate to have sung in the BCMEA Honour Children's Choir, the Richmond Youth Honour Choir, BCMEA Honour Vocal Jazz choir, RC Palmer's jazz choirs and chamber choir, RichCity Idol, as well as to have taken voice lessons for 5 years, and in between it all, done a long stint of musical theatre. She has participated in BCYC for the past 4 years and has been singing with UBC A cappella since she began her Speech Sciences major at UBC in the fall of 2008.

She is excited to be on the BCYC Youth Council because it'll provide her the opportunity to 'give back' to the choir that's meant so much to her, while supporting the choral society in BC that's supported her all these years.

Ian Cheng - Promotions Team

Ian is a third year Computer Engineering student at UBC.  Although he is in the Faculty of Applied Science, he has a passion for music and loves to play instruments and sing.  Throughout the years, he has been a member of many orchestras and choirs, including the Vancouver Youth Symphony Orchestra, UBC Symphony Orchestra, the UBC A Cappella club and, of course, BCYC.  When not in the rehearsal room, Ian enjoys spending time on the field playing Ultimate.

Jenny Shan - Member-at-Large

Jenny is in her fourth year at Emily Carr University of Art and Design. Music to her is not only a passion but also continuously influences her creation; she believes music and art are therapeutic for the mind and raise it to a higher level. BC Youth Choir has been one of her favourite choral experiences and she is happy to be part of the BCCF Youth Council.

Vanessa Johnson - Member-at-Large

Vanessa is a law student at the University of British Columbia. She also has a love of new and exciting choral music, and enjoys performing with Phoenix Chamber Choir.

"I really enjoy being on the Youth Council, and helping the Council provide amazing opportunities to youth across BC, like the ones they have provided to me through projects like BC Youth Choir."

Anders Lau - Member-at-Large

Anders is a BC Registered Massage Therapist that happens to enjoy singing.

Though massage therapy and singing may seem like unrelated subjects, he firmly believes the two are equally important to good health.

"Therapeutic touch affects the body; Music affects the soul - both positively!"

Cara Wong - Member-at-Large

Cara has recently received both her BMus and BEd from UVic, and is now teaching high school music. An active musician, she currently performs with Vancouver Bach Choir's Sarabande and the New Westminster District Concert Band.
